The Run

Army 1st Lieutenant Joseph Vitti and Marine 1st Lieutenant Chris Cavanaugh, both students at Duquesne University at the time of Ryan’s death, heard the news and decided that this man should never be forgotten. The two worked together in the fall of 2009 to launch what would become the annual “Run for Ryan.” The run, which honors the life of Sgt Ryan Lane, is held every spring on Duquesne University’s campus; all of the proceeds from the run are transferred into a scholarship fund which is used to support the academic financial needs of student veterans attending Duquesne. Since the first “Run for Ryan” which was held in April 2010, over $50,000 has been raised to support the education of student veterans. Each year, the event grows larger and larger, with more of the Pittsburgh community attending.
